International project under the Weave – UNISONO competition
entitled: “Advanced approaches for determination and understanding of asphalt mix fatigue behaviour
is looking for a PhD student – scholar holder

POSITION NAME: PhD student – scholar
NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 1
UNIT NAME: Faculty of Civil Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology
CITY: Warsaw
LINK TO THE UNIT’S WEBSITE: https://www.il.pw.edu.pl/en/
REQUIREMENTS:
  • a student of doctoral studies or a doctoral school student within the meaning of the Act of July 20, 2018 – Law on Higher Education, Poland,
  • very good results in studies at the master’s studies in the field of Civil Engineering or the discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport,
  • research interests in the field of technology of road materials and pavements and the durability of road pavement structures,
  • experience in carrying out tests in the physical and rheological properties of bitumens and asphalt mixtures (e.g. in MSc. thesis, professional experience, participation in projects, etc.),
  • competencies and knowledge of the properties of bitumens and asphalt mixtures, test procedures for asphalt materials, principles of asphalt mixtures composition design, basics of the rheology of viscoelastic materials, statistical analysis and interpretation of laboratory test results,
  • English level – minimum B2 + (preferably C1) – international project, work in English.
TASK DESCRIPTION: The scholarship holder will be involved in an international project as part of the Weave – UNISONO action entitled: “Advanced approaches for determination and understanding of asphalt mix fatigue behaviour” (PL: Zaawansowane metody oceny i analizy zagadnienia zmęczenia mieszanek mineralno-asfaltowych).

Aim of the project: definition and validation of an artificial neural network-based predictive model for fatigue-life of asphalt mix based on bitumen fatigue and empirical characteristics of asphalt mix. Moreover, it is assumed to provide easy to use and quick prediction tools of parameters that could indicate the performance of the mixture before using tests in a laboratory.

Tasks description:

  • Select materials (bitumens, aggregates), determine material’s properties and design asphalt mixtures.
  • Characterise bitumen fatigue and study functionality with fatigue parameters.
  • Characterise fatigue and cross-section effects and crack propagation of asphalt mixes, assistance in FEM modelling.
  • Involve in creating predictive models by the method of artificial neural networks.
  • Experimental verification of predictive models.
  • Manage and archive current data following the Data Management Plan (DMP) and draft reports by the assumptions of the DMP.
  • Commitment to preparing manuscripts for scientific Journals based on the results of the research.
