Stands of Faculties, projects of student research groups, sightseeing of the University, conversations – these are the highlights of the event for everyone interested in studying at WUT. Come on the 14^th of June from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Entrance is free.

The most important venue of the Day will be the WUT Main Building (pl. Politechniki 1). Its Main Hall will be filled with stands of all WUT Faculties, departments organising admissions to studies and doctoral programmes, psychological support and support for persons with disabilities, and a stand devoted to students’ life. You will have an opportunity to talk with students, doctoral students and staff members about degree programmes and studying, and to ask questions.

In the picnic area outside the Main Building, you will see WUT student research groups with their projects. Students will share their knowledge, present their achievements and tell us how you can accomplish such things.

Our Faculties will open the doors to their lecture rooms, laboratories, workshops and studios. Thanks to that you will be able to better and closer meet the places, people and fields of study.

Call for papers: The future of property valuation and the influence of E(SG) criteria for residential buildings

Overview

With global climate goals accelerating the focus on sustainability, the property sector has increasingly recognised the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. Many property investors are now integrating sustainability criteria’s into their decision making, and regulatory demands around energy efficiency and carbon reduction are continually rising. These energy performance regulations can significantly impact property portfolios and valuations.

For example, in France the LOI Climate et resilience law prohibits rent increases for residential properties with poor energy performance (EPC ratings of F or G), while under the UK MEES regulation, properties are required to meet at least an EPC rating of E to be eligible for rental. Non-compliance introduces liquidity risks, lowers property values, and increases operational costs for tenants, making properties less attractive and harder to let.

Competition objective

The RICS European student competition invites university students to investigate the critical factors influencing energy efficiency in the residential property sector and their impact on property valuations.

The aim is to develop a prioritisation matrix based on RICS’s 12 core indicators (2024a), assessing which energy criteria hold the most influence on valuation. Factors such as EPC ratings, CRREM stranding risk dates, building certifications and country-specific legislation will be key focus areas.

As regulatory frameworks and energy standards differ across regions, students will explore and analyse how local laws shape property valuations. The work should draw on academic research, industry experience (reports from property stakeholders and assessors) and case studies (where available) to demonstrate how sustainability influences property values through energy characteristics.

FAQs

The competition is open to all students in Europe, whether enrolled in an RICS-accredited course, a non-accredited course, or a non-cognate course.

Submissions should be in English, include the research paper (maximum 5,000 words) and a short CV of the contributing authors. The paper should also include an abstract of up to 200 words.

Submissions must be sent in digital form to Pia Kobal Snoj at: psnoj@rics.org by 31 January 2025, 23:59 with the subject matter ‘RICS in Europe Student Competition’.

Yes, submissions can be done individually or collaboratively.

The best three papers will be selected from all submissions. Winners will be notified and have the opportunity to present their work through the World Built Environment Forum (WBEF) platform— which is a RICS-led, broad and growing global knowledge forum, comprising thought leaders and contributors from across the land and building lifecycle. Additionally, winners may have the opportunity to present at a national event (details to be confirmed).

Yes! The first-place winner will receive €1,000, the second place €600, and the third place €400.

Everyone who is #alwayscurious – about the world, but also about information on our fields of study, admissions, student life and the whole Warsaw University of Technology – is invited on 20 May 2023 at 10.00-15.00 to the Main Building and our Faculties.

In one of the most beautiful spaces of Warsaw – the Great Hall of the WUT Main Building (Pl. Politechniki 1) there will be stands of all Faculties, as well as of the Doctoral School and stands connected with student life at the University. People from abroad interested in studying at our University may find information on admissions at the stand of the International Students Office.

Outside the Main Building, our student research associations will present their projects. They will show, among other things, robots, rovers, an electric bolide and other vehicles, installations and various scientific phenomena.

Our students’ bridges conquer the world

Two teams from the Scientific Circle of Bridge Builders of the Warsaw University of Technology qualified for the second stage of the international steel bridge competition DE&CO ’23. Our students will be the only representatives of Poland.

In the first stage, the participants’ task was to design a steel bridge with a span of 6 m (measured from the inside of the supports). The gauge under the bridge had to accommodate a box with a height of 75 cm and a width of 2 m. The structure itself could not be higher than 2 m, with the total weight not more than 300 kg. In addition, each part of the bridge (excluding the supports) should fit within the dimensions of 120x25x25 cm and weigh no more than 7 kg.

As it can be seen, there were a lot of requirements, but the WUT students lived up to the challenge. The teams focused on other aspects of the structure.

The creators of the Beautiful bridge: Maciej Siemionko, Edgar Maciejewski, Mateusz Rajda, Paweł Pachla and Radosław Szarwiło focused on minimizing the assembly time and the lightness of the structure.

The Kartal 7 team consisting of Michał Pawłowski, Julia Czaplicka, Karol Urbańczyk, Mateusz Frydrycki and Piotr Ambrochowicz opted for a proven arch structure, minimization of deflection and aesthetics.

These different design approaches will be essential in the second stage of the competition. There, participants will present and then independently assemble the designed bridges. The structures will then be loaded: horizontally (applying 25 kg to the side together with 35 kg at the top) and vertically (applying 1250 kg at the top). The assessment will be comprehensive. The teams will receive points for aesthetics, uniqueness, assembly time, vertical displacement, horizontal displacement, and bridge weight. The second stage of the competition will take place in May at the Boğaziçi University in Turkey.

The project “digital Decathlon”, co-funded by the European Union in the Erasmus+ program (Action type KA220-HED – Cooperation partnerships in higher education), has begun on December 1, 2022, with completion scheduled for March 31, 2025.

“digital Decathlon” is a student design competition held at European universities. The goal of the project is to develop an innovative, curriculum-integrated educational offering to enhance digitization competencies in higher education and to teach Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology through the participation in an interdisciplinary design team. The competition promotes interdisciplinarity through the collaboration of construction-related disciplines on a joint project and internationalizes higher education to promote social and intercultural competences and strengthen European identity.

Two competitions are planned, each to be held during one winter semester, the first in the 2023/2024 academic year and the second in 2024/2025. At the beginning of each competition joint lectures and workshops will be held for all participants, and at the end of each competition there will be a central final event with the presentation of projects and the selection of winners. All projects will be published on a dedicated website.

The ten disciplines of the “digital Decathlon” are divided among the five universities.

Jade University of Applied Sciences shall be responsible for integrated study programs as decentralized simulation games and will and Jade University shall focuse on architectural aspects as well as will be responsible for Quantity Take Off based on 3D model.

The BIM Institute at the University of Wuppertal has developed an e-learning course that will be upstreamed as a qualification for participating in the competition. The second discipline is product tracking to provide site transparency and comprehensive insight into the production of building materials.

The Karelia University of Applied Sciences shall introduce Green BIM in the scope of competition works. As the competition is not only about building more digitally, but also about using the digital transformation to build better, more resource-efficient, climate-friendly and quality-assured buildings. The Karelia University of Applied Sciences is supporting the project in the disciplines of timber construction/structural design and life-cycle assessment.

The University of Florence, with its focus on simulation with 3D models, can contribute to the investigation and optimization of student projects for sustainability aspects. Their second discipline is construction process simulation.

The Warsaw University of Technology will be responsible for designing building services, coordination and communication through BIM tools, techniques and processes. Both disciplines are very important for obtaining well-coordinated industry BIM models and equipped with systems properly modeled, as well as designed for the assumed function of the building.

WUT Christmas Market 2022 is just around the corner!

Entry to the Market is free – we encourage everyone to participate!

It has already become a tradition that at the beginning of December in front of the Main Building there are wooden chalets with Christmas specialties. The same is going to happen this year. Everyone is welcome from 1 to 3 December at 10.00-18.00.

The central point of the WUT Christmas Market 2022 will, obviously, be a chalet with our university gadgets. Among them, there will be new designs of the WUT iconic socks. We have also prepared – among others – cups, bags, games and sweets. For the first time, our Market will also feature handicrafts made and handed over by students, doctoral students and WUT employees.

All gadgets and products will be available in exchange for a donation – like in previous years, the collected money will be allocated to the Christmas Scholarship – a special distinction for talented and active students and doctoral students.

Attention, we accept donations only in cash, however, the nearest ATM is in the lobby of the Main Building.

On December 1, the opening day of the Christmas Market, we will meet the winners of this year’s edition of the Scholarship, and will formally present them with prizes. We have raised funds for this purpose thanks to the generosity of the participants of last year’s Christmas Market – thanks to this, we will distribute 27,420.60 PLN.

On the first day of the even, there will also be the premiere of a new Christmas illumination of the Main Building and the handover of Christmas trees to the WUT faculties.

Admission to our three-day event is free. We strongly encourage everyone to participate!

We invite our students and doctoral students to submit for the Christmas Grant 2022 – a special grant awarded to students and doctoral students at the Warsaw University of Technology involved in promoting the University and building its positive image. The grant is financed by the resources collected during the WUT Christmas Fair.

Candidates’ nominations may be submitted to the Office for Communication and Promotion in an electronic form to eventy@pw.edu.pl from October 12 to November 2, 2022.

Regulations and appendixes – Christmas Grant 2022 – editable version

The Christmas Grant may be awarded to students and doctoral students who between 2020 and 2022:

have succeeded in science competitions (national and international),
have succeeded in artistic, sports, or other competitions or contests (national and international),
have participated in projects, initiatives, and events promoting the Warsaw University of Technology,
have actively contributed to the popularisation of scientific concepts among children, adolescents, and adults,
have become involved in social actions and charity work.

Additional points will be awarded for a diligently conducted presentation.

The application will include:

a multi-media presentation prepared in accordance with these Regulations,
a candidate’s declaration on granting or refusing consent for the use of their image for marketing purposes, constituting Appendix No. 1 to these Regulations,
information on the person nominating a candidate, constituting Appendix No. 2 to these Regulations (for candidates who do not nominate themselves).

The Christmas Grant will be awarded to candidates with the highest score.

The Award Committee will determine the number and amount of the grants. The grant laureates receive it as a one-time payment. The award ceremony will take place at a time set by the Award Committee.
